GitHub is looking for a Design Manager to lead our Site Design team. Our Site Design team is part of the larger Design team within Marketing and is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our marketing-focused web properties. For example, GitHub's primary marketing site, event sites, annual reports, brand campaigns, documentation, and more. Successful Design Managers balance the needs of their team with that of Marketing at large, provide design direction to their team, and measure the effectiveness of their work.

As Design Manager, you’ll work closely with a team of distributed web designers, engineers, and Marketing leadership to translate business requirements into beautiful and effective websites that support our programs, products, and initiatives.

Our ideal applicant is experienced in designing and building websites, cares deeply about intuitive interfaces and experiences, approaches problems holistically, and can inspire and lead a team in doing their best work. We look for Design Managers who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, responsive to evolving requests, and proactive in their projects and team development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of technical web designers (all of whom sketch, design, and code) by setting clear priorities, defining success metrics, aligning work with appropriate resources, and delivering clear design direction and timely feedback.
  • Communicate and collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing and Design peers to research, prioritize, and translate business goals into great experiences for GitHub users.
  • Document, evolve, and maintain the team’s design processes.
  • Foster an inclusive environment where everyone can bring their whole selves to work.
  • Model personal accountability and an egoless ownership of projects.
  • Support career development of direct reports.

Minimum qualifications

  • Prior experience as a people manager.
  • Portfolio of prior experience designing and building effective consumer-facing websites.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into design problems and solutions.
  • Deep understanding of website design and development best practices, tools, and techniques.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience attracting and hiring design talent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Expertise in front-end code (primarily HTML & CSS) to guide informed decisions for how our websites should be built, to participate in code reviews, and to maintain complex web properties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while managing resources and several projects simultaneously.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Git and GitHub
  • Experience with larger code bases (e.g., Rails apps)
  • An interest in elevating and maintaining a strong brand
  • Experience using and contributing to a design system
